The Homestead on the Holston was a land grant to the Hart family in 1796 to settle the westward frontier boundry of Virginia. the original plat included over 11,000 acres which followed the north fork of the Holston River to it's confluence with the south fork of the Holston close to the Allendale Mansion and the Netherland Inn in Kingsport, TN. Tennessee boundaries were yet to be established. The Harts were required establish a permanent presence within first year. Conditions associated with the grant further stated the family would provide services including a venue for a circuit judge and lawyers to hold court and provide civil services for the State and other settlers in the area. Therefore, weddings have been preformed on The Homestead property since around 1777; Kelsey Kilgore was married to Steven Taylor at The Homestead in 2005 and Kilgore/Taylor/Burkett family celebrations and charitable events have taken place at The Homestead since 1991 under the supervision of Linda Burkett.
The log house, standing on the original footprint, is built of hand hewed virgin timbers of yellow popular. The logs were joined using the dovetail technique and each log was locked in place with wooden pegs. The two chimneys were chiseled from solid limestone mined from the property. Massive stones weighing tons were raised in place without automated machinery, an impressive feat of engineering at that time. Over the past 23 years, The Homestead has been restored, renovated and lovingly preserved for future generations by Charles and Linda Burkett. The home is decorated with period pieces, and treasures from the past.
